Tips to improve Palm Pre battery life

If you own a Pre, you may discover that your battery doesn’t last as long as you want it to.  When I picked up my Pre on launch day it took me a day or two but before I left for work on Monday I realized that I needed to charge my phone even though I hadn’t done anything but put it in my pocket.

Over the course of that Monday, I just couldn’t figure out what was going on.  Thanks to my curious mind, I was able to find some ways to ensure you get better battery life out of your Pre.

a) Screen brightness – when you get your Pre out of the box, the screen is in the middle of the range in terms of brightness.  By lowering it, you’re able to preserve some power.  To adjust brightness got to the Screen & Lock section, and you can update it from there.

b) Wi-Fi/Bluetooth – being able to connect wirelessly to a bluetooth headset or to a wireless network uses power as different radios are transfering and receiving information.  Make sure these are both turned off.

c) Push E-mail – if you setup an email account, you may be tempted to set it to grab the mail as it arrives but doing so ends up wasting power as the phone is constantly connecting to check and see if new mail is available.  As an alternative, you can set your email accounts to check for mail ever 15 minutes instead.

d) GPS – one of the greatest features of the Pre is the ability to quickly locate destinations or get directions.  By turning GPS off, you can still use it.  The phone will ask you if you want to turn GPS on when a program wants to use this service.  Having it on only when you need it will make a considerable difference in the power that you use.

e) Apps – using apps from the Apps Catalog will drain your power.  Whether you’re checking out the weather, or listening to music from Pandora your battery will be pushed down and used up faster.  It doesn’t make sense to recommend to not use apps, being more conservative about how you use them could help your phone last longer.

These tips are my own take after reading an article on Gearlog.com.
