Homebrew Apps Take Over Where App Catalog Has Disappointed

I tried to be good.  I really did.  A part of me wanted to wait until Palm got their act together but it’s getting harder and harder to do it.  Apps are starting to trickle in, but much of it is the same stuff which has already been in there.

I’ve started seeing a lot of information about homebrew apps.  First let me take a step back.  Developers who have access to Palm’s Mojo SDK has been writing programs waiting for them to be allowed into the App Catalog.

Some of the developers have decided to sneak their way in by allowing people to add their apps by “sideloading” them.  This doesn’t require the phone to be completely hacked (like people do to their iPhones).  Instead it involves some trickery to allow the phone to receive these files and know that they are games.

Over the next few days I plan on digging in and finding out if homebrew apps are everything people are making them out to be.

Stay tuned.

AccuWeather for the Pre is absolutely pointless

On July 12, there was a concert at Chastain Park’s amphitheatre in Atlanta. The concert started at 7:30pm. Before my wife and I left, I made a point to check the weather and sure enough it said that it would be a great day and we headed out on our way to the venue expecting to enjoy our concert.

We were wrong, and AccuWeather is to blame. Not only was it not nice outside by the time we got these but it was absolutely pouring outside with thunder and flood warning across many counties in Georgia. Even during the downpour I turned to AccuWeather and can you imagine it was still saying that the weather was supposed to be sunny when I looked at the hour by hour. I had to get another source to see if this was a problem with AccuWeather or if all of the weather services had the same issues.

I opened up weather.com and it called it perfectly. It said it was raining, it was going to keep raining and it was going ot keep on during the night.

I’ve given up on AccuWeather. Instead I added a bookmark to Weather.com. Either way I’m going to need internet service in order for it to get updated. Hopefully an update in the next few weeks will make this app better so I can go back to using it.

How to move apps in and out of the launcher

Unknown_2009-27-06_223220

As you’ll see from the screenshot above, the standard applications are no longer in the launcher.  Instead I was able to add Google Maps and Messaging in there and removed Contact and Calendar.  How did I do it?

The first thing I did was hit the black launch button all the way on the right.  From there, I simply selected the programs I wanted to remove.  To do so, I selected the application I wanted to remove (ex. Contact) by  pressing my finger on the screen where the app is until a white ring around the icon for the app.  Then with your finger, move the app out of the launcher and into the menu with all of your other apps.

This will give you an empty space which you can use putting another app in it’s place.  To do, you’ll just repeat the previous steps in reverse.  Find the app you want to move into the launcher and press your screen above where the apps is.  Once a white ring appears around the icon for the apps move it down and voila – you’re done.

Doing this has helped save me from wasting time swiping to get to what I want.
